Construction robots might become a reality as a newly created humanoid robot can now act as constructor and carry out simple construction task such as installing a drywall.

Japan’s Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) have created a new humanoid robot that can perform simple construction tasks such as installing a drywall.

AIST demonstrated the robot named HRP-5P where it can be seen using hooks to maneuver the drywall into its rotating hands and then nails it into the wall.

Tech Crunch reported that the bot uses a combination of environment detection, object detection, and careful movement planning to install the drywall by itself. Apart from fastening up boards with a screwdriver, HRP-5P can also correct for slips and can even work when it has a limited field of view.

As per The Verge, AIST hopes for the humanoid bot to be used on construction sites as an alternative for Japan’s aging population and labor shortages. For the future, the institute is also aiming for autonomous replacement of labor at assembly sites for bigger structures like buildings, houses, ships, and aircrafts.

“It is expected that many industries such as the construction industry will fall into serious manual shortages in the future, and it is urgent to solve this problem by robot technology,” creators said.
