At least 28 worshippers were killed while another 29 injured in a suicide blast inside a local mosque in Mohmand Agency during Friday prayers. "The suicide bomber was in the crowded mosque. He shouted Allahu Akbar and then there was a huge blast," said Naveed Akbar, Assistant Political Agent of Mohmand agency adding that the blast occurred at the veranda of the mosque.
He said that the mosque was located in village Payee Khan in Anbar tehsil of the agency. He said that the injured had been shifted to hospitals in Bajaur Agency, Charsadda and Peshawar for treatment. According to witnesses and locals, a large number of worshippers were present in the mosque, during the time of blast. They said impact of blast was so intense that 28 worshippers embraced martyrdom and 29 were injured. Security forces rushed to the site instantly after the blast.
Police said the rescue operations faced severe difficulties owing to lack of communications because it is a far-flung area. A security source also confirmed the explosion was a suicide blast. The source said that the suicide bomber blew him up in the veranda of the mosque. There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but Pakistani Taliban in particular routinely attack soft targets such as courts, schools and mosques.
On Thursday, a woman was killed in a hand grenade attack in Lower Mohmand Agency. An official of political administration said unidentified militants lobbed grenades and opened fire at the house of a pro-government tribal elder Malik Nasir Khan in Shah Alam Sali, Michni. As a result, a woman inside the house was killed. However, the militants fled the site after retaliatory fire from the neighbouring houses.
