The overall situation of dengue spread in Lahore is under control due to better surveillance in all nine towns of Lahore district except the DHA, Lahore where 100 suspected patients of dengue fever have been identified and out of which 42 patients are confirmed for having dengue virus as the cause of their feverish condition. This was revealed in a video link conference on dengue review held under the chairmanship of Advisor on Health Khawaja Salman Raffique, here on Tuesday.
Additional Chief Secretary Punjab Shamail Ahmad Khawaja was the Co-chairman, while Commissioner Rawalpindi Azmat Ali along with other administrative officers and EDO (Health) were present on video link. DCO Lahore Muhammad Usman Yunis warned that this year the vector mosquitoes are contaminated with Dengue-I type of virus while last year Dengue-II type of virus was prevalent. The population of Lahore have "Zero Immunity" against this species of dengue virus, so the patients are more vulnerable to become victims of hemorrhagic dengue fever if they had been exposed to Dengue-II type of virus in the last year.
Shamail Ahmad Khawaja directed the Lahore administration to focus on DHA region and the adjoining areas of Aziz Bhatti Town, Nishter Town and Gulberg Town Lahore for proper management of dengue patients so that the situation may not worsen in the days to come.
He directed the Commissioner Rawalpindi to pay maximum attention on patient management in the government sector hospitals in Rawalpindi while the Punjab government will arrange special conference on dengue control in the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad.
Khawaja Salman said, "We should be very focused on pollution free environment and cleanliness during coming two months as they are very important in the backdrop of the fact that it would be the best weather for growth of mosquito carrying dengue virus."
