Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has directed divisional administrations to vacate 1000 labour apartments illegally occupied by mafia. He issued these directives while presiding over a meeting on the issues of Labour Department on Friday, said a statement. The meeting was attended by Advisor to CM on Labour, Senator Saeed Ghani, Advisor on Law, Murtaza Wahab, Chief Secretary, Siddique Memon, Secretary Labour, Rasheed Solangi, Secretary Finance, Hassan Naqvi and others.
Briefing the chief minister, Advisor on Labour, Saeed Ghani said that around 1000 apartments have been constructed in Gulshan-i-Maymar for industrial workers. Those apartments have been allotted to workers through balloting but the workers have not been given the possessions because the flats were occupied. The chief minister directed Commissioner of Karachi, Aijaz Ali Khan to take necessary action and get these apartments vacated and report him.
Secretary Labour, Rasheed Solangi informed that there were 765,000 registered workers in Sindh. He added that these workers and their dependants were being provided health facilities through five hospitals, five medical centers and 39 dispensaries. Saeed Ghani said that under ILO Conventions `Universal Social Security may be provided to all the workers even if they are self-employed.
Discussing the mechanism of implementation of the plan, he said that a 'Benazir Card' issued by NADRA would be given to the registered workers for availing health and education facilities. The self-employed workers would be convinced to avail the facility through different campaigns. The chief minister terming the proposal good for every worker living in the province urged the Advisor for Labour to prepare a detailed plan and discuss it on different forums for open debate.
Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah directed Labour Department to develop a data base of their registered 765,000 workers and their dependents. The meeting also discussed that most of the functions or objectives of SESSI, provincial EOBI and Workers Welfare Fund (WWF) are similar, therefore, Saeed Ghani suggested to merge all of them into a single institution to avoid unnecessary duplication and it would also be easy to deal the employers and workers from single platform.
