The government has not taken action against the MQM fearing public reaction, Secretary Interior Arif Khan told the Lahore High Court on Monday. A full bench was hearing petitions seeking a ban on the MQM. The petitioners had sought action against Altaf Hussain under treason charges for delivering different anti-Pakistan and anti-armed forces speeches. Justice Mazhar Ali Akbar Naqvi, heading the bench, remarked that track record of this government showed it never took any action of this sort.
Deputy Attorney General Naseer Ahmed Bhutta said the MQM was divided in three factions, one is headed by Farooq Sattar, the other by Mustafa Kamal and the third is London-based. Justice Naqvi said it was an issue of national importance and the bench wanted to know about the steps taken to stop such speeches in future.
