Sindh High Court (SHC) on Monday sought comments from National Accountability Bureau (NAB) and deputy attorney general on the bail plea filed by Ali Ahmed, the former secretary local government, Sindh in a corruption case. The former secretary was arrested by NAB on 3rd October 2016 on the charges of accumulation of assets beyond his known income. According to NAB, the accused had caused Rs 37.3 million loss to the national exchequer during his service on different government positions from 1984 to 2014 including the post of secretary local government.
"The accused had earned almost Rs 9.94 million during his service term in the government. The applicant has land and a petrol pump and earned almost Rs 9.95 million and Rs 6 million from both sources, respectively. Hence, the total income of the accused from his all sources of income is about Rs 26 million so far, but the deposited amount in his bank account is about Rs 340 million," NAB reference said.
On the other hand, the petitioner submitted in his plea that all the charges against him were baseless as he never remained involved in any sort of corruption or embezzlement during his entire career. He requested the court to grant him bail after arrest. The SHC bench, headed by Justice Naimatullah Phulpoto, heard the bail plea of the accused, and issued notices to NAB's special public prosecutor and deputy law officer of the federal government to file comments in this regard in the next hearing.
