The Lahore High Court on Thursday asked the Attorney General of Pakistan to assist the court on November 1 in a petition of Pakistan Tehreek Insaaf leader Jahangir Khan Tareen seeking disqualification of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for his alleged involvement in offshore business. Jahangir submitted that Panama leaks revealed massive corruption of the ruling family.
The petitioner said a reference was moved to the Speaker of the National Assembly against PM Nawaz Sharif but he dismissed the reference instead of referring it to the Election Commission of Pakistan. He said the NA Speaker had no powers to dismiss the reference. He also said that the PM had no ground to hold public office after Panama's allegations. The petitioner prayed the court to set aside the order of the NA Speaker regarding reference against the PM and order the ECP to declare the PM as disqualified. Another identical petition of former chief justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry's Justice and Democratic Party is already pending before the court against the Sharif family.
