Deputy Mayor Karachi Dr Arshad Vohra on Wednesday vowed to work on child labor issues to ensure their rights as per international practices. During a meeting with a human right delegation at his office, Vohra said the local bodies' government would arrange and provide basic education and training programs on child protection at districts' level.
Human Right Foundation President Rana Asif Habib on this occasion expressed reservations over the deplorable situation of children in the city.
"Of the total 200 million population of metropolis, some 40 percent are children. They need urgent protection," he said and added the authorities concerned should come up to address their issues on priority bases. He said: "Number of child labor is alarmingly increasing with the passage of time as presently some 500,000 children are working at various places such as shops/ hotels/ homes, markets etc in Karachi, out of them some 3000 are sleeping on roads/streets along with their families." He underscored the need of eliminating children right violations at every level.
He said the non-government organizations were working positively for child rights, but they do not have a proper network.
