Paksitan People's Party (PPP) on Thursday submitted a calling attention notice in the National Assembly Secretariat regarding the explosion in an oil tanker at Gadani ship-breaking yard in which more than 18 people were killed and many sustained serious injuries.
The PPP termed this incident sheer negligence of the federal government specially Federal Minister for Port and Shipping. The calling attention notice was submitted by PPP Members of the National Assembly (MNAs) Dr Nafisa Shah, Syed Naveed Qamar, Syed Ghulam Mustafa Shah, Amer Ali Khan and Dr Azra Fazal in the National Assembly Secretariat. The calling attention notice was submitted under rule 88 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in National Assembly 2007.
According to the calling attention notice, "We the undersigned would like to invite the attention of Minister for Ports and Shipping towards the explosion in an oil tanker at Gadani ship-breaking yard in which more than 18 people have died and numerous sustained serious injuries."
"It is sheer negligence on the part of the federal government as workers lack adequate facilities, appropriate equipment for these kinds of specialized tasks. It is the responsibility of the government to ensure that proper safety measures have been taken or not before the initiation of work. This is not the first incident at Gadani as accidents are regularly reported at this place, but the government did not pay any heed to these incidents which now have resulted in such lethal tragedy."
"This is a serious matter and needs to be discussed immediately on the floor of the Lower House of the Parliament."
Syed Ghulam Mustafa Shah said while talking to Business Recorder that the incident occurred due to negligence. He said that a transparent inquiry should be conducted and responsibility fixed on those responsible and added that the federal government should take pre-emptive measures to avoid such incidents in future.
