The Senate Standing Committee on Interior and Narcotics Control on Tuesday asked Ministry of Interior to submit a report before the panel regarding the murder case of senior cardiologist of Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) within six weeks.
The committee which met with Senator Abdul Rehman Malik in the chair asked the Secretary of Ministry for Interior to supervise the investigation into Dr Shahid Nawaz' murder case in co-ordination with Inspector General of Police (IGP) Islamabad and submit a report to the committee within six weeks.
The senate penal expressed anger when the committee was informed by police that investigators have so far made no progress in probe of Dr Shahid Nawaz murder case despite the passage of two years. The committee decided to hear the viewpoint of Secretary Interior, IGP Islamabad, DIG operations Islamabad and the whole investigation team in the next meeting with the initial report.
Malik questioned the fact that during the last two years many postings and transfers have been made in the Islamabad police and every time a different police officer has come to brief the committee.
The committee asked the DIG operations to address all concerns of the committee in their investigation ie why the investigation did not take place when the committee raised the matter and why did the process face delays. The committee also directed police to stay closely in touch with the family of the victim and that zero progress on the case is a matter of embarrassment for the police in particular and society in general.
The committee was scheduled to discuss the Police Order (Amendment) Bill, 2016, The Pakistan Penal Code (Amendment) Bill, 2016, The Islamabad Registration (Amendment) Bill, 2016, The Islamabad Restriction on Employment of Children Bill, 2016 by Senator Azam Khan Swati and The Smuggling of Migrants Bill, 2016, The trafficking in persons Bill, 2016 by Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed. The bills were deferred due to absence of movers.
