Adviser to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs, Sartaj Aziz Monday expressed the apprehension that continued Indian unprovoked firing on the Line of Control (LoC) and Working Boundary constitutes a threat to the maintenance of peace and security that may lead to strategic miscalculation.
In a statement, the Adviser condemned the unprovoked Indian firing on the LoC that has led to martyrdom of seven Pakistani soldiers in Bhimber area. He expressed grave concern over the recently increased frequency and duration of indiscriminate firing and shelling from the Indian side, deliberately targeting villages and civilian populated areas, which has resulted in killing of 26 civilians and caused injuries to 107, including women and children, in complete violation of the 2003 Cease-fire Understanding and international law.
He said that the Armed Forces of Pakistan gave a befitting response. The Adviser expressed the apprehension that the Indian actions, which constituted a threat to the maintenance of peace and security, may lead to strategic miscalculation. He emphasised that Pakistan was exercising maximum restraint in the face of Indian belligerence. He said that Pakistan is urging the UNMOGIP [United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan] to send an urgent report to the UN Security Council to inform it about the serious cease-fire violations on LoC and the unwarranted escalation of tension between the two countries.
