The Bhikki power plant located in Sheikhupura started generating energy on trial basis, the government said on Tuesday. Water and Power Ministry in a statement has said that the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) based power plant is capable of generating electricity of upto 1200 megawatts.
The government of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) is trying to overcome the crippling energy crisis in the country that has hit hard the national economy. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has announced to get rid of the power loadshedding in Pakistan by year 2018.
The LNG-based Bhikki power project will save Rs 175 billion to the national exchequer, the government sources claimed. The project will add 750 megawatt of power by March 2017 and will reach to its full capacity of 1200 megawatt by December 2017. The power ministry has also stated that the work on transmission lines along with power plants is ongoing at a rapid pace.
