An increase of 3.81 percent in inflation during November 2016 as compared to the same month a year ago is owing to hike in prices of food items, according to Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) Briefing media here Thursday, Chief Statistician Asif Bajwa said a proposal would be forwarded to the Council of Common Interests (CCI) to conduct population census in the two phases as full strength of required forces would not be available in one go. He said the proposal would soon be forwarded to the CCI for consideration.
Inflation rose by 0.21 percent in November 2016 over the previous month of October 2016 and 3.92 percent in July-November 2016 as compared to the same period of the last fiscal year. The cost of food & non-alcoholic beverages rose by 2.50 percent in November 2016 as compared to the same month a year ago, non-perishable food items by 3.42 percent, alcoholic beverages & tobacco by 17 percent, clothing & footwear by 4.23 percent, housing water, electricity, gas and other fuels by 4.92 percent, etc.
The price of eggs increased by 23.21 percent, potatoes by 21.14 percent, grapes by 17.29 percent, arvi by 7.39 percent, gas cylinder by 7.35 percent, pulse gram by 7.28 percent, chillies green by 6.33 percent, Johar Joshanda by 5.99 percent, besan by 5.85 percent, internet charges by 5.75 percent and iron bar by 5.25 percent.
Year-on-year price of garlic increased by 69.66 percent, gram whole yellow by 51.46 percent, Lederplex by 48.60 percent, pulse gram by 39.95 percent, gram whole black by 36.05 percent, Entox tablet by 34.20 percent, besan by 33.36 percent, Dettol medium by 29.70 percent, postal registration charges by 28.61 percent, cinema a/c high class by 27.55 percent, potatoes by 26.06 percent, and the cost of turnip increased by 25.83 percent.
The cost of food & non-alcoholic beverages during the first five months of the current fiscal year has increased by 3.12 percent when compared to the same period of last fiscal year, non-perishable food items by 2.90 percent, perishable food items by 4.27 percent, alcoholic beverages & tobacco by 17.53 percent, clothing & footwear by 4.38 percent, housing, water, electricity, gas fuels by 4.79 percent, furnishing & household equipment maintenance by 3.56 percent, health by 6.76 percent, communication by 0.56 percent, recreation & culture by 1.39 percent, education by 9.57 percent, restaurant & hotels by 5.67 percent and miscellaneous by 3.92 percent.
Food commodities whose prices showed increase during July-October 2016 are gram whole by 45.77 percent, pulse gram by 39.27 percent, besan by 35.06 percent, pulse mash by 27.71 percent, potatoes by 27.28 percent, fresh vegetables by 18.94 percent, cigarettes by 17.60 percent, betel leaves and nuts by 12 percent, sugar by11.20 percent, education by 9.57 percent, water supply by 9.14 percent, personal equipments by 8.15 percent, doctor (MBBS) clinic fee by 8.15 percent, pulse masoor by 7.40 percent, and eggs by 7.29 percent.
