Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited (ZTBL) has been unable to reduce its number of loss-making branches in loss during the last three years, as the bank branches in loss stood at 134 in 2015 as compared to 133 in 2013.
A copy of the performance brief for the last three years available with Business Recorder shows that ZTBL was operating with 379 branches in 2013 with 246 in profit and 133 in loss. In the subsequent year, the number of bank braches was increased to 416 and the number of branches in loss also soared from 133 to 155 while the branches in profit were stated to be 261. The ZTBL branches in 2015 increased to 438 with 134 in loss and 304 in profit.
The ZTBL profit before tax has risen to around 39 per cent during last fiscal year while growth in disbursement increased by 16 per cent. The ZTBL profit increased from Rs 8.6 billion in 2013 to Rs 9 billion in 2014 and Rs 12.5 billion in 2015. The bank deposits have increased from Rs 14.9 billion in 2013 to Rs 26.7 billion in 2014 and Rs 36.2 billion in 2015.
The loans disbursement of the bank increased from Rs 71.1 billion in 2013 to Rs 81.0 billion in 2014 and Rs 95 billion in 2015 while a growth of Rs 36.435 billion was recorded in the lending portfolio subsequent to an increase from Rs 108.7 billion in 2013 to Rs 123.7 billion in 2014 and Rs 145.1 billion in 2015.
The brief further noted that ZTCL, formerly known as Agriculture Development Bank, has been playing an important role in the development of agriculture sector of the country. Historically, the ZTBL's disbursement operation had been financed through borrowing from State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) but since 1997, after the censure of funds by SBP, the ZTBL's role gradually shifted from the effective driver of agriculture growth towards extension of credit.
