The government has announced Rs 100 million compensation package for the victims of Indian troops' unprovoked firing along Line of Control (LoC), as Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will soon visit Azad Jammu and Kashmir to distribute compensation cheques among the affectees.
Briefing the National Assembly Standing Committee on Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan about the losses caused due to unprovoked firing by the Indian army at Neelum Valley along the LoC, Additional Chief Secretary of the AJK Farhat Ali Mir said that Prime Minister Sharif is visiting AJK to distribute the compensation amount among the affectees as well as to express solidarity with Kashmiris. MNA Malik Ibrar Ahmed presided over the meeting.
He apprised the committee that 39 people, including 29 males and 10 females, were killed and 128 other got injured because of unprovoked firing of Indian army. "Four houses located at LoC were completely destroyed while 75 were damaged partially due to the firing," he further said.
The committee recommended considering increase in the compensation amount for the victims. The concerned officials of forestry and wildlife department of AJK and GB also briefed the parliamentary body on the overall well-being of natural environment and preservation of jungles and wildlife in GB/AJK regions.
The additional chief secretary also highlighted the damages and effects on environment due to heavy firing and fencing the border by the Indian side across the Line of Control in the last few months. "Heavy firing caused huge damage to the flora and fauna along the LoC," he said, adding that many animals have gone missing in the area due to firing.
Managing Director National Engineering Services Pakistan (NESPAK), Amjad A Khan briefed the committee about the projects which are going on under NESPAK. He informed the committee about the progress of ongoing 13 projects.
The committee pointed out the issue of redesigning of different projects which caused escalation of cost and delay in projects, particularly in the case of Rathoa Haryam Bridge across water reservoir channels on Mirpur-Islamgarh Road, Azad Jammu & Kashmir. The chairman further directed the secretary ministry of KA & GB to submit a detailed report on the said project to the committee in its next meeting. The meeting was attended by Khalil George, Chaudhry Abid Raza, Malik Abdul Ghaffar Dogar, Sardar Mumtaz Khan, Babar Nawaz Khan, Asiya Naz Tanoli, Shamas-un-Nissa, Junaid Akbar, Syed Waseem Hussain, Molvi Agha Muhammad and senior officials.
