The Judicial Commission of Pakistan on Tuesday recommended the elevation of Peshawar High Court Chief Justice Mian Mazhar Alam Khan as the judge of the Supreme Court whereas the Commission also proposed the name of senior puisne judge of Peshawar High Court Justice Yahya Afridi as the Chief Justice of the High Court. The seat in the top court has been lying vacant since Justice Iqbal Hameed-ur-Rehman tendered his resignation in wake of Supreme Court's verdict regarding illegal appointments in Islamabad High Court.
According to sources, Chief Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali chaired the meeting. Four senior judges of the apex court, law minister, attorney general for Pakistan and representative of Pakistan Bar Council participated in the meeting.
The proposed names of the judges for the slots would be sent to the Parliamentary Committee on Judges Appointment for approval. It is learnt that the tenure of two ad hoc judges of Supreme Court - Justice Tariq Pervez and Justice Khilji Arif Hussain - came to an end on December 13. They were appointed a year ago in the Supreme Court.
