Speakers at the "14th Eurasia Conference on Chemical Sciences (EuAsC2S-14)" spoke on Pakistan, its role in the region and importance of some of its institutions. National and international scientists spoke at the inaugural ceremony of the 4-day international conference entitled "The 14th Eurasia Conference on Chemical Sciences (EuAsC2S-14)," at the H.E.J.
Research Institute of Chemistry, International Centre for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), University of Karachi (UoK) on Thursday. Dr Attaur Rahman, former Federal Minister for Science & Technology and ex-chairman Higher Education Commission Pakistan inaugurated the international conference where over 740 scientists, including 150 foreign researchers from around 45 countries are participating making it one of the largest science conferences in Pakistan in recent years.
Professor Dr Attaur-Rahman, president of relevant forum of Economic Cooperation Organisation (ECO) Professor Dr Manzoor Soomro, vice chairman of the 14th Eurasia Conference, Professor Dr Bilge Sener (Turkey), Director ICCBS, Professor Dr Muhammad Iqbal Chaudhary, Chairman H.E.J. Foundation, Aziz Latif Jamal, chairperson Dr Panjwani Memorial Trust, Nadira Panjwani and Dr Syed Ghulam Musharraf addressed the opening session.
Professor Atta-ur-Rahman said that ICCBS was a leading institution in the world, where scientists and researchers were working day and night for the promotion of science and research. Based on needs of the country, this research establishment was being expanded into fields such as genomics, nanochemistry, clinical research etc.
Professor Manzoor Soomro elaborated that ECO was an inter-governmental regional organisation that Iran, Pakistan and Turkey established in 1985 as the updated version of the RCD. "In 1992, the Organization was expanded to include seven new members. The ECO region is full of bright trading prospects. Despite its young age, ECO has developed into a thriving regional organization. Its international stature is growing," he said.
Professor Iqbal Chaudhary said that Science is all about finding the universal truth. He said that Eurasia Conference was a mega event that brought the leading scientists of the world at one platform. He informed the participants that Pakistan was cradle of great ancient civilisations.
"Pakistan is the country which owns seven mountain peaks out of the 12 peaks around the world. It is the wealthiest country as far as enormous natural resources are concerned," he said, expressing pleasure that Pakistan hosts again the conference especially at the Golden Jubilee year of the International Centre for the Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS) (1966 - 2016).
Aziz Latif Jamal said that science was a fascinating field. He said the H.E.J. Research Institute of Chemistry, University of Karachi was considered the shining face of Pakistan as this institute became the recognition of Pakistan in the world of science all over the world.
On education, Nadira Panjwani said that there was an alarming situation in the country because providing people with quality education to the masses in the country was really a mammoth task. She urged all the stakeholders to be united for the sake of promotion of higher education in particular. Turkish scholar, Professor Bilge Sener termed the Eurasia Conference in Pakistan as pivotal for the training of young scholars, and for the promotion of science in the host country. A Jordanian professor Amal Al Aboudi read out the message of chairman and founding member of the Eurasia Conference Professor B. Michael Rode (Austria), who was absent from the conference due to ill health.
