Amazon to invest millions in US and UK for recycling, green energy initiatives
With the aim to go more green and take a greener initiative, Tech giant Amazon has signed a deal to reduce waste and its carbon footprint.
Amazon recently announced two new green initiatives in the US and the UK in order to decrease waste and its carbon footprint (carbon dioxide emissions), by investing millions of dollars for the initiative.
In the US, the company has decided to invest $10 million in Closed Loop Front that supports recycling infrastructure through US. This investment will bring curbside recycle to three million additional homes and keep around one million tons of recyclable material out of landfills by the year 2028, reported Engadget.
Facebook promises to go 100% green by 2020
Closed Loop Fund CEO Ron Gonen said. “Companies are seeing that they can meet consumer demand and reduce costs while supporting more sustainable future and growing good jobs across the country. We applaud Amazon’s commitment to cut waste, and we hope their leadership drives other brands and retailers to follow suit.”
Dave Clark, Amazon’s senior vice president of Worldwide Operations, said, “We are investing in Closed Loop Fund’s work because we think everyone should have access to easy, convenient curbside recycling. The more we are all able to recycle, the more we can reduce our collective energy, carbon, and water footprint.”
Similarly in the UK, Amazon will start installing 20 megawatts worth of solar panels on its fulfillment centers as a part of its effort to put up solar systems on 50 of its centers around the world by 2020. Over the next 18 months, Amazon aims to install rooftop solar systems on 10 of its UK fulfillment centers and when completed, its UK solar systems will be able to power the equivalent of 4,500 homes and reduce its carbon footprint by 6,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year, as per The Verge.
Also, Amazon has committed to power its UK buildings with 100% renewable energy including solar and wind energy and install battery systems in its fulfillment centers to help manage energy demand during peak times. As a part of its going green efforts, the firm has been constructing wind farms across the US with more on the way.
Moreover, Amazon is not the only company moving forwards towards going green. Previously, Apple and Facebook too announced that they are working towards renewable energy.
