The third death anniversary of former Superintendent in Sindh Police Chaudhry Muhammad Aslam Khan aka Chaudhry Aslam was observed on Monday. Chaudhry Aslam, who played a key role in tackling terrorism in Karachi, was killed in a suicide attack on 9th January 2014. He was known for his sturdy style and aggressive stance on terrorists. He killed and arrested countless terrorists in encounters and gained immense fame during the Karachi operation.
Chaudhry Aslam was recruited in police in 1984 as an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) and served as the Station House Officer (SHO) at various police stations of the city. He remained the SHO Kalakot, Lyari in 1991, while in 1994 he was the SHO of Gulbahar Police Station.
He had a central role in the law enforcement operations in 1992 and 1996 in Karachi. He was promoted to the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in 1999. Chaudhry Aslam again promoted and made the Superintendent of Police (SP) in 2005 when he arrested the underworld don Shoaib Khan. The slain officer was also appointed as the head of Lyari Task Force as he gained enough reputation for his stern action against the gangsters there.
He often came across with the then don of Lyari, Rehman Dacoit. Muhammad Aslam Khan became the head of the Investigation Wing of the CID in 2011 and foiled several plots of terrorism in Karachi and led numerous ambushes on them. He had survived five unsuccessful attacks even his house was attacked with a bomb by outlawed Al-Mukhtar militant group. This last attack that took his life was his last call from the duty according to his wife. The impact of the explosion was so severe that it destroyed his vehicle and killed his driver and gunmen instantly whereas Chaudhry Aslam, who suffered severe injuries in the terrorist attack, succumbed to his wounds in a hospital.
Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) had taken responsibility for the terrorist attack which claimed the life of the police officer. The evidences suggested that the attack was carried out by 26-year old Naeemullah, who hailed from the tribal areas in the north-west of Pakistan.
