Leader of the Opposition in Sindh Assembly on Wednesday blamed the Sindh Anti-Corruption Department for concealing the government's financial records to refrain Rangers and National Accountability Bureau (NAB) from taking actions against corrupt elements.
He also voiced concerns over the 'soaring' street crimes in Karachi, asking the Sindh government to appoint a provincial home minister to stem the increasing fears of insecurity among the citizens.
The opposition leader, belonging to MQM-Pakistan, Khawaja Izhar-ul-Hasan said: "Situation in jails is painful where prisoners are treated like animals and human rights violations are common."
He said that his party would raise voice against the miseries of the inmates of prisons and a resolution on the issue has been submitted in the house for debating the issue.
Speaking on a point of order during the session, Kh Izhar said that the Sindh Anti-Corruption Department in order to ensure its transparency in financial matters should not be headed by a minister. "Unless this happens, the department cannot be freed from interference on the part of the government," he opined.
Advocating the need for running the department strictly in accordance with rules, he said that it must ensure transparency in its actions aimed at eliminating corruption.
Accusing the Sindh chief minister of 'running' the affairs of the provincial Home Department through media, he said that there should be a minister who could take immediate measures for decreasing the incidents of street crimes.
Earlier, during the question-answer session on matters pertaining to Sindh Anti-Corruption Department, PPP legislator Manzoor Wassan accused the PML-F of getting 36,000 acres of land illegally allotted in Khairpur. "When I was the Anti-Corruption Minister, I had point it out," he told the house, but his statement prompted the PML-F legislators to protest against his remarks, resulting into to disturbances in the house.
When the PML-F's legislator Nusrat Sehar Abbasi, during a question-answer session vis-à-vis the Anti-Corruption Department's performance, termed it "Aunty-Corruption Department", Deputy Speaker Shehla Raza got irritated and then both - Shehla and Abbasi - passed sarcastic remarks against each other. Shehla continued derisive remarks at Nusrat Abbasi, which again spurred a pandemonium in the house. In the meantime, Nusrat Abbasi and PPP's senior legislator, Nisar Khuhro, also exchanged hot words and ridiculed each other in the house.
Replying to a question, Nisar Khuhro told the house that the department had filed 776 cases against 227 people between November 30, 2019 and 2013. When PML-N's lawmaker Surath Thebo asked "whether angels live Mirpurkhas and Benazirabad as a report of the anti-corruption department says that not a single case was filed in those cities," Khuhro replied:" the department acts on complaints about corruption". The house will now meet on Thursday.
