The country's top ranking varsity, Quaid-e-Azam University (QAU), has become a notorious place for drugs and gambling parties, it was revealed before a parliamentary panel here on Wednesday.
The QAU officials are involved in supplying alcohol and hashish to students, revealed the university officials while briefing the National Assembly Standing Committee on Federal Education and Professional Training. The meeting was chaired by MNA Colonel Dr Amirullah Marwat (retd) at Quaid-i-Azam University.
The officials further said that they informed police and raids were conducted on such parties but the accused were released later. Besides students, private people also reside in the university hostels, they added.
The vice-chancellor QAU briefed the committee over the performance, achievements and challenges faced by the university. He informed that Quaid-e-Azam University was ranked at number 01 throughout Pakistan and within 57 states of the Organisation of Islamic Co-operation (OIC).
He further said that 79 per cent faculty members hold PhD degrees and the university published 1,163 research publications in journals in 2016. He also highlighted the issue of encroachment on the Quaid-e-Azam University land before the committee.
The committee directed the vice-chancellor to prepare the master plan of the university as well as PC-1 of the boundary wall around the university in one month in order to include it in PSDP for financial year 2017-18.
The committee also took serious note of a news report published against the chairman HEC in media by the spokesperson for the university. However, the vice-chancellor apologised for it immediately and told the committee that he was not taken on board about it and the news was given to media without his prior permission.
The committee further urged the vice-chancellor to overcome the shortcomings regarding financial mismanagement and administrative issues and focus on the quality and standard of research as well. The committee assured its full support at every forum to make the university one of the top ten universities of the world level.
The meeting was attended by MNAs Muhammad Nazir Khan, Dr Zulfikar Ali Bhatti, Shaista Pervaiz, Chaudhary Hamid Hameed, Phyllis Azeem, Surriya Asghar, Dr Shazia Sobia, Shahida Rehmani, Dr Imran Khattak, Shahida Akhtar Ali, Dr Nikhat Shakeel Khan and Sardar Kamal Khan Bangulzai, and officers/officials of the ministry and its attached departments.
