For the first time in Pakistan, the Department of Ophthalmology, Lahore General Hospital (LGH) has started the treatment of blindness by adopting modern technique of change of cornea in a successful manner. The first surgery of this kind has been carried out successfully in LGH and after the surgery the vision of a 12-year Alishba of class-V has been restored.
The parent and relatives of Alishba have expressed their gratitude to Professor Dr Abdul Hayye, the head of Surgeons team and Principal Post Graduate Medical Institute (PGMI) and LGH Professor Ghiyas-un-Nabi Tayyab who bore all the expenses of this successful operation.
This type of surgery, called DSEK in medical language, has been conducted for the first time in Pakistan successfully by Professor Abdul Hayye, in-charge unit II of Eye Department, LGH.
Alishba, daughter of Habib Ahmed, a resident of Kot Abdul Malik is first beneficiary patient from this technique in which cornea is changed.
Doctors of the department themselves contributed the amount for buying cornea from Sri Lanka, preparation of cornea from FEMTO laser and expenses of operation.
Professor Abdul Hayye said DSEK is a modern way of treatment which helps remove cornea related complications giving back the blessing of visibility to patient. He said that it was matter of pride for us that the LGH has taken initiative in Pakistan to start this type of operations.
Professor Ghiyas-un-Nabi Tayyab congratulated Professor Abdul Hayye and his staff and said this success would earn good name for the hospital. He said that all the departments of LGH are advancing because LGH administration is focused on research and enhancement of doctor's professional capacity by conducting training workshops and medical symposiums.
