Argentina will harvest 52.9 million tonnes of soya this season, the Rosario grains exchange said on Thursday, cutting its previous 54.4 million tonne forecast due to bad weather while another leading exchange chopped its planting area estimate. The Rosario exchange said in a special report that an estimated 710,000 hectares of soya have been lost due to floods in north Buenos Aires and South Santa Fe provinces while another 300,000 hectares in south Buenos Aires have fallen to drought.
Also on Thursday, the Buenos Aires Grains Exchange shaved its soya planting estimate for the current 2016/17 season to 19.2 million hectares (47.4 million acres) from a previous forecast of 19.3 million hectares, citing the same extreme weather.
With 99.1 percent of this season's soya already planted, the Buenos Aires exchange said crops had been hampered by floods in northern Buenos Aires and southern Santa Fe provinces. Meanwhile, excessive dryness has caused problems in southern Buenos Aires, the exchange said in its weekly report. Excessive rains have affected 770,000 hectares planted with soya. "Depending on the weather over the weeks ahead, half of that area could be lost," the report said. At the same time, it said the drought in southern Buenos Aires had worsened, "impeding farmers from finishing their planting and increasing the area that will not be sown this season."
