Karachi police has announced it killed 25 criminals and arrested 2,380 in the city during January. In their monthly performance report, police said 1,888 raids and 77 encounters were carried out in different areas as part of the ongoing Karachi Operation that led to the arrests of 2,380 persons reportedly involved in criminal activities. They busted as many as 51 gangs operating in the city during the same period.
The report said that during the operations police arrested 478 criminals under the Arms Act and 532 were arrested under the Narcotics Act. Also arrested were 199 absconders, 98 dacoits and robbers, two extortionists and 19 men accused of committing murder. Fifteen were arrested under the Terrorism Act, and 26 proclaimed offenders and 1,010 facing charges were also arrested during the time period.
Police said it recovered 578 hand guns, 11 Kalashnikovs, eight rifles, three repeaters, 12 revolvers, three daggers, a carbine, two shotguns, 16 hand grenades, 2,041 bottles of liquor, 6 kilograms of heroin and 185 kilograms of hashish during the campaign.
A police official was killed and four sustained injuries during the police campaign.
Analysts say that the city's law and order has improved since the launch of the Karachi Operation in September 2013.
Major crimes in Karachi, including targeted killings, kidnappings for ransom and extortion, declined considerably during the last couple of years because of police efforts.
However, the law enforcers are yet to find a remedy for street crime. A report by the Citizens Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) says that over 2,600 people were robbed of their mobile phones only in January. Also stolen in January, according to the report, were 123 four-wheelers and 1,727 motorcycles.
On Thursday, the Rangers killed a notorious Lyari gangster Noor Muhammad, alias Baba Ladla, and his two accomplices, Sikandar, alias Sikko, and Mohammad Yaseen, alias Mama, in a predawn shootout in the Phool Patti area of Lyari Town. Lyari residents generally expect that Baba Ladla's elimination could help improve law and order the crime-prone area.
