Prime Minister Nawaz Shairf has appointed senior female diplomat, Tehmina Janjua, as Pakistan's new foreign secretary, the country's first ever woman to hold the high profile slot. "The Prime Minister has been pleased to appoint Tehmina Janjua, presently serving as our Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, as the new foreign secretary," said a Foreign Office handout.
Tehmina Janjua will assume her office in March 2017 as Pakistan's first ever female and 29th foreign secretary. She would replace Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry who has been appointed as Pakistan's new Ambassador to United States. The current Ambassador in the US Jalil Abbas Jilani will retire next month.
Janjua is a seasoned diplomat with a career spanning over 32 years. She has rich experience of working in bilateral and multilateral domains both at headquarters and missions abroad. She also served as spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs during 2011. Janjua served as Ambassador of Pakistan to Italy from December 2011 to October 2015. Presently, she has been serving as Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the United Nations in Geneva since October 2015. She holds master degrees from Quaid-e-Azam University, Islamabad, and Columbia University, New York.
