The Sindh Police on Sunday claimed to have arrested as many as 3717 illegal immigrants during the first two months of 2017 and registered cases against them. Among them 2759 foreigners were rounded up for residing in Karachi illegally.
This was stated in a police performance report presented to Inspector General of Police (IGP), Sindh, A.D. Khowaja, according to a Sindh police statement. AIG (Operations) Sindh Shiraz Nazeer presented the report on police performance during January and February 2017 that has been made public some two weeks after a deadly bombing claimed by Daesh group that left more than 88 devotees dead and scores others injured at the shrine of Muslim saint Lal Shahbaz Qalandar in Sehwan on February 16 last.
The report said that 84 criminals including 24 terrorists were killed and 1861 others were arrested in the raids and encounters conducted under National Action Plan (NAP) and ongoing Karachi Operation.
IGP Sindh A.D. Khowaja called for ensuring extraordinary security at every level for the protection of life and property of the people.
He directed that a police strategy should be chalked out for the year 2017 against crimes on the basis of comprehensive and co-ordinated measures under the security and policing plan.
He also directed that security must be beefed up. He stressed on the foolproof and more effective action against crimes be made foolproof and more effective. The report pointed out that there were 143 police encounters all over the province during the period and as a result 1,861 were arrested.
They also included: two kidnappers, 24 killers, nine extortionists and 167 dacoits. As many as 787 accused were arrested under Weapons Act and 834 accused were nabbed under Narcotics Act.
The weapons recovered included 39 SMGs /Kalashnikovs, 12 shotguns /repeaters, 24 rifles, 1,005 pistols/revolvers/mausers and 51 hand grenades and bombs.
