Sindh University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Fateh Muhammad Burfat distributed certificates among participants of a training workshop at the concluding ceremony held in the Senate Hall of Ghulam Mustafa Shah Administration Building, University of Sindh, Jamshoro here on Monday.
The 10-day training workshop was held at the Institute of English Language & Literature (IELL) under Active Citizen Program (ACP) of British Council with the overarching aim to deepen trust and understanding within and between communities. Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Fateh Muhammad Burfat on the occasion awarded certificates to all 35 participant students and 18 resource persons/ facilitators.
Addressing the participants, the vice chancellor Dr Burfat said that the 'Mother Mortality Ratio (MMR)' had increased from 147th last year to 149, adding that all the countries in the region had far better health indicators as compared to Pakistan. He said Pakistan sustained high MMR of 276 per 100,000 live births and the under-five child mortality rate of around 89 deaths per 1,000 live births during the last decade or so.
He said the mortality rate among the under-five-year children born in a city like Karachi was as dismally high as 68 per 1,000 live births. "One in every 170 women in Pakistan has the lifetime risk of during-delivery death", said Professor Dr Fateh Muhammad Burfat. In another parallel ceremony, Dr Burfat also gave away cheques to the 22 scholars of M Phil and PhD under Prime Minister Fee Reimbursement Scheme.
