Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Shaharyar M. Khan has expressed his firm resolve to purge the menace of match fixing from cricket by following a zero-tolerance policy. "If any player is found guilty of match fixing, his career will be over," Shaharyar said while talking to media, here at the Qadhafi Stadium on Monday.
Answering a question, Khan said the PCB had evidence against Sharjeel Khan and Khalid Latif that was why both were suspended during the Pakistan Super League 2017. "But we did not have proof against Mohammad Irfan and Shahzaib Hasan, hence they were not suspended," he added. However, he said the PCB's Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) is questioning other players.
It may be noted that PCB's ACU summoned batsman Shahzaib Hasan and pacer Irfan in relation to the board's investigation into alleged corruption in the Pakistan Super League IInd edition. Answering another question, PCB chairman said that the board will accept whatever decision the tribunal makes regarding Sharjeel and Latif. "Once the investigation is completed, we will take appropriate action against the players," he said.
Blaming the poor standard of education in the country, Khan was of the view that players must have proper education and counseling. "Players need to be briefed properly before they are inducted in the team," he stressed. He added that he has sensitised the players in his interaction with them today about wrong doings in cricket. "Players need to show maturity and cautiousness while dealing anybody. The match fixers are using new tactics' like contacting players through friends and relatives, he said.
Khan also talked about decline in fielding and fitness. He pointed out that five players in the training camp do not fulfil the fitness criteria. "Three senior and two junior players have doubtful fitness," he added. "We would go all out to maintain fitness of players."
Regarding the upcoming tour to West Indies, the PCB chairman emphasised that fielding and fitness are the number one priority of the team and management. Khan also announced that Talat Ali will be the new manager of the Pakistan team for the tour of West Indies. Talat Ali has replaced Wasim Bari as the team manager.
