Pakistan celebrated the silver jubilee of 1992 World Cup on Saturday as the historic day of March 25 marks the completion of 25 years since Pakistan became the world champions of cricket for the first time. Pakistan team that was on verge of getting eliminated from the tournament at one point, ended up as world champions after witnessing many ups and downs throughout the event.
The one point in rain-affected group match proved to be the most significant for the 1992 champions as it saved them from getting knocked out in the initial stage. The Imran Khan eleven was invincible afterwards in all the eliminators as they brushed aside all odds to conquer the world.
It was the historic day of March 25, 1992 when Pakistan thrashed England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) by 22 runs with the help of skipper Imran Khan's brilliant knock of 72 runs despite shoulder injury. Pakistan set England the target of 250 runs to claim the world title, but Mushtaq Ahmed and Wasim Akram made the task impossible for the inventors of the game. Mushtaq picked up three wickets for 41 runs and Wasim Akram delivered arguably two of the best balls in the history of World Cups claiming the precious wickets of Allan Lamb and Chris Lewis. The two lethal in-swingers happened to be the final nails in the coffin for England.
Akram also ended up with three wickets and was declared man of the match for his game-changing spell. Skipper Imran Khan retired from cricket after making his side the world champions. Wasim Akram, on Saturday, took to Twitter and expressed his feelings over this historic day and said this day does not only hold significance in his career, but also in the history of Pakistan cricket.
