London's benchmark FTSE 100 index dropped 0.8 percent to 6,907.60 points.
In the eurozone, Frankfurt's DAX 30 index shed 0.8 percent to 11,098.68 points and the Paris CAC 40 lost 0.4 percent to 4,933.95.
