An Indonesian Lion Air Boeing 737 crashed on Monday into the sea off the Indonesian coast after taking off from Jakarta.

The plane carrying 188 passengers and crew crashed into the sea, a spokesman for the country’s search and rescue agency, Yusuf Latif confirmed. A search and rescue operation has been launched for the plane.

The plane took off from Jakarta and was scheduled to land at Pangkal Pinang, but 13 minutes into the flight, authorities lost contact with the plane, international media reported.The Lion Air was carrying 178 adult passengers, one child and two babies, with two pilots and five flight attendants.

The head of Indonesia’s disaster relief agency took to Twitter and posted pictures and video which shows debris and oil floating on the water.
