Planting of saplings and awareness speeches marked the World Earth Day celebrations at the University of Sindh (SU) here on Friday. Led by SU Registrar Dr Muhammad Saleem Chandio and the Chairman of Department of Geography Professor Muheb Ali Leghari joined the students and teachers in planting as many as 200 saplings in the campus. The students were holding placards saying "saving mother earth" and "protect environment." Professor of Physical Education Institute Dr Mahmood-ul-Hassan Mughal, Professor Sujo Mal and others were also present on the occasion.
In his Earth Day message, read out by SU Registrar, the Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Fateh Muhammad Burfat appealed to the students to grow trees in their houses and at campus. "Every day should be treated as earth day and saplings must be planted. Importance should be given to environment protection," he said.
He also pointed out to the growing of Neem trees in the university as per love of SU founder, VC's better half, Elsa Kazi who had a great adoration for these trees. He said youth should be encouraged to play their role in dealing with environmental challenges like deforestation, pollution and water scarcity. According to the Vice Chancellor, 170 countries celebrate Earth Day on April 22 every year and we have started celebrations one day prior to it with the aim to ensure the participation of students as the Saturday is holiday on the campus.
Addressing on the occasion, the Chairman of Dept. of Geography Professor Muheb Ali Leghari said that the event aimed to increase awareness among students and the general public about environmental safety. He said the theme of the event was 'green cities', which focused on renewable energy, energy efficient buildings and environment friendly transportation.
Professor of Physical Education Department Dr Mahmood-ul-Hassan Mughal said that plantation drives must be carried out at a number of schools, colleges and universities like that of Sindh University so that environmental awareness could be raised among students. Earth day was founded by senator of United States Gaylord Nelson. The day is intended to create awareness among people about the natural environment of earth.
