Speakers at a seminar have urged the government to introduce economic and social reforms to tackle serious problems of social injustices, unemployment and poverty in the country. They said that widening inequalities prevailing in the society could be bridged by raising the wages of the workers commensurate with price-hike and dealing with every citizen of the country equally under the law.
They were addressing the seminar organized by the officials of Sindh University and community leaders of Jamshoro which was held at Institute of Sindhology, University of Sindh, Jamshoro. Addressing on the occasion the SU vice chancellor Professor Dr Fateh Muhammad Burfat said that the quality education was must for development of society adding that no nation could ever go to the path of progress without participation of women.
He announced to establish two cadet colleges one especially for girls which will be run under the administration of Sindh University. "I have talked to the military hi-ups in Hyderabad, they are ready to help Sindh University in establishing two colleges like cadet college for imparting quality education to the children of employees, teachers, officers and residents of Jamshoro and suburbs," he maintained.
He said that the prevailing two schools running under the administration of SU could not impart contemporary and quality education that was the need of time. Dr Burfat said MRD and other movements in Pakistan especially in Sindh were successful in past only due to participation of labours, teachers, students and lawyers. "If these classes of society unite and stand for their rights, no body could deprive them of their rights," he said. Terming the social injustices as the root cause of all crime, he said the injustices give birth to frustration and frustration causes depression and thus the people fall prey to constant disappointment and then turn to crime and extremism.
Referring to his recent China visit, Dr Burfat said there he met with graduates of Sindh Varsity Ayaz Samo and Ayaz Hakro who were pursuing their PhDs in two different universities and their research works had been acknowledged in China and USA but during the conversation they said they were rejected and ignored by the SU's selection board during the interviews of lecturers.
"If we lose such meritorious research minds then how can we uplift the varsity on the path of progress," he enquired. SU vice chancellor assured the participants that he would ensure merit in recruitment process of lecturers and no any recommendations by the external power will ever be entertained in this regard adding that the advertisement had already been given for various vacant posts. On the occasion, he introduced a new slogan 'Each one, teach one' and advised the teachers, officers and employees to take care of the students of the varsity. Addressing on the occasion, columnist and writer Mushtaque Mirani said that the rights of labours were protected in prevailing era where as the rights of the people in 16th, 17th and 18th centuries were not sheltered adding that the labours in these times were forced to work 18 hours a day.
He said the 6-year old were forced to work in mid 17th century. He said the concept of labour was initiated in 1780. This was the time, he said when people were forced to work for long and extended hours. "The economic activity in rural Sindh is going down which is alarming; the government must do all in its power to increase social and economic activities in order to provide the people with an opportunity to earn their livelihood," he said.
Speaking on the occasion Dr Azhar Shah said that there were three kinds of labour out of which one is physical, second is mental and third one is spiritual adding that labour in every form is dear to God Almighty. He resolved to mark 'International Labour Day' with great fervor in a bid to get concerted struggle against the outdated feudal and capitalist systems making the rich richer and the poor poorer.
Dr Azhar Shah also appealed to all the patriotic forces to forge unity to defeat the divisive and reactionary forces in the country to make Pakistan a democratic and welfare state based upon equality, fraternity and tolerance. On the occasion, Professor Asghar Burfat, Rafique Ali Brohi, Ghulam Nabi Kaka, Engr. Sajjad Shah and others also spoke and paid a rich tribute to the martyrs of Chicago. The musical show was also followed by the seminar that continued till the dead of night.
