Opposition parties including Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) have once again asked Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to tender resignation till joint investigation team (JIT) constituted by the Supreme Court completes inquiry into the Panama Papers case.
The PTI and JI leaders while talking to media persons outside the Supreme Court building here on Friday said that the Prime Minister has lost all credibility to rule the country in wake of verdict in the Panama Papers case by the Supreme Court and thus he must resign and a new prime minister be elected till JIT completes the probe.
Replying to a question regarding Supreme Court's directions to parties involved in Panama Papers case to avoid media talks on the subject, PTI leader Fawad Chaudhary said that his party will keep highlighting the issue on media as well as in public gatherings. He said that the PTI accepts the Supreme Court's decision and would cooperate in this regard. "But we will not compromise on the transparency of the JIT." He said that Supreme Court's decision should reflect feelings of masses, adding that "our stance from day one is very clear on the issue that Prime Minister Sharif must resign as he has lost moral authority."
The PTI leaders said that attorney general has accepted before the court that the Panama Papers case has brought a bad name for the country, so keeping in view international repercussions, the ruling party must ask the Prime Minister to resign. Fawad Chaudhry said that resignation is the only way out for the Prime Minister as he is complicit in Panama Papers and Dawn Leak cases. PTI leader Naeem-ul-Haq alleged that the government is concealing the report and said the Prime Minister has no moral authority to continue his work as the chief executive of the country. While talking about other issues, he said that report of Dawn Leaks that has been hidden should be made public. The people are awaiting the report on the Model Town incident, he maintained. He questioned if the Prime Minister has been hiding the Model Town report because his brother is involved in the incident.
The two leaders said that the PTI is keenly observing both the cases. They demanded that the investigation team should appraise the nation of findings every fifteen days. Talking to media persons on the occasion, JI leaders Mian Aslam and Asadullah Bhutto said that every corrupt person should be punished as it is the only way to rid the country of major ills. They said that the JI is not targeting a single person or party but wants action against all the corrupt that ruined national institutions. They also demanded the Prime Minister to resign to ensure free probe, with a warning that the JI would not compromise on transparency pertaining to probe of Sharif family. The JI leaders said that the party appreciates that the Supreme Court is closely monitoring the matter, saying that every institution has to play an active role in rooting out the menace of corruption from the society.
JI Sindh leader Asadullah Bhutto, while talking to Business Recorder said that there is a huge difference between the stances of the PTI and JI on the issue of corruption. He said that the JI wants to bring every corrupt person to justice either from military or civilian side. He explained that the other parties are targeting individuals instead on the corrupt system, which is the root cause behind every ill.
