Armed men looted around Rs 7 million from a private bank branch here in the jurisdictions of Khwaja Ajmer Nagri police station on Wednesday. Station House Officer, (SHO) Asif Munawar, told Business Recorder that the incident took place at around 10:15 am when five to six armed robbers barged into a private bank branch located in Do-Minute Chowrangi in North Karachi. The robbers took the bank staff and customers hostage at gun point, looted cash worth Rs 70,00,000 and escaped uninterrupted.
The police reached the scene after the incident. He said an FIR 127/2017 has been registered against unidentified robbers and investigation was in progress, however, no culprit was arrested till filing of this report. Later, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sindh AD Khowaja ordered DIG (CIA) to conduct detailed inquiry about the bank heist instances in specific localities of Karachi and measures adopted to combat the crime.
He in this context also sought compilation of evidence collected from the scene of crime, pertaining to bank robbery so as to ensure arrest of culprits and their patron, without any delay.
The Sindh police chief said the investigation must be foolproof and comprehensive so that not only criminals in this particular case were apprehended but also the series of similar incidents reported for past some time was also brought to an end. He also ordered the officials concerned to also present a detailed report about measures adopted for security of banks as well as shops and public outlets in areas registered to be frequently targeted by criminals.
