Lawyers across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa boycotted court proceedings on Tuesday to protest against the murder of their colleague Advocate Zaib Alam in Mardan. The Peshawar High Court Bar Association gave the strike call. The lawyers did not appear before courts in Peshawar and also boycotted court proceedings in other parts of the province.
The PHCBA reminded the government that growing violence against lawyers was leading to slow dispensation of justice and demanded immediate arrest of those responsible for the murder of Zaib Alam. They also demanded security for legal fraternity of the province. Meanwhile, people suffered several difficulties as their cases were adjourned without hearing due to lawyers' boycott of the courts proceedings.
Zaib Alam was the former vice president of Mardan Bar Association. He was currently associated with the Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party. He was shot dead by his enemies in Turo area of Mardan on Monday. According to Toru police station, Jan Alam Khan resident of Toru, brother of the deceased told police that his brother Zaib Alam Khan advocate was going to local courts. On the way on Toru Newa Killy road Malak Fayaz Ahmed (uncle of the deceased) and his son Malak Azam allegedly started firing on him. As a result he died on the spot.
The motive behind the murder was stated to be a property dispute. The accused managed to flee after committing crime. The police shifted the body to Mardan Medical Complex (MMC) for autopsy. Later after the autopsy police handed over the dead body to heirs. Police registered case against the accused and started investigations. Deceased Zaib Alam Khan was a well-known lawyer and was also provincial leader of Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP).
