The president of the Pakistan Businessmen and Intellectuals Forum (PBIF), Mian Zahid Hussain, has said the country can generate 3,000 megawatts from solid waste. He said that many countries are using waste to generate electricity while some are also importing waste. But the situation in Pakistan is altogether different. It will help the government to tame the energy crisis and improve the environment of the cities which have been degraded due to the apathy of the municipal authorities.
Mian Zahid Hussain said the country is producing a huge amount of solid waste daily, and Karachi's share is 60,000 tonnes. It has become difficult to manage the municipal waste while the volume of the waste is expected to double in three years, he added. He said that ten million tonnes of waste is generated annually after agricultural operations that can be put to use. The urban and rural waste can be used in brick kilns, in cement plants in place of coal and elsewhere.
He said that such an arrangement will not only clean the cities but also add to the incomes of the municipal corporations. All the local and foreign investors who tried to invest in waste-to-energy projects were shown the door, which sent out a very negative signal, he added. Encouraging the private sector can help the country attract investment in this sector.
