Supreme Court on Monday granted 10 days to Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Nehal Hashmi to submit a reply over his threatening speech through which he warned judges of the apex court and members of the Joint Investigation Team of dire consequences. On June 01, the apex court had decided to initiate contempt of court proceedings against Hashmi and issued him a notice to submit a reply on June 05 whereas the Attorney General for Pakistan Ashtar Ausaf was appointed prosecutor in the case.
Appearing before a three-judge Special Bench led by Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan, Hashmi submitted that no lawyer is ready to represent him in the case because they are scared to represent him. Hashmi requested the court to adjourn the hearing till Eidul Fitr, saying he intends to perform Umrah.
Hashmi was of the view that he remained a part of the struggle for restoration of judiciary in the country to which Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan observed, "We know that you have worked for supremacy of law and you will be provided enough time to submit your reply." Responding to Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan who initially fixed June 15 as next date of hearing, Nehal Hashmi shrewdly excused saying he has plans to arrange iftari on the same day. Nehal further requested the court to play the recording of his speech in the court room because he hasn't brought the copy of his speech. To which a Justice Ijazul Ahsan remarked, "It seems you're taking the case lightly as your reply should have been submitted this day." Justice Ijazul Ahsan observed the matter in hand is a serious matter so Hashmi should not take it so lightly. Later, the court adjourned the hearing of the matter till June 16.
