In order to ensure the safety and security of the irrigation infrastructure in case of flood during the monsoon, all the engineers and field officers have been directed across the province to enhance the patrolling on the canals. It was also stressed to implement the recommendation of Safety Evaluation Cell.
This was disclosed by Secretary Irrigation Punjab Captain Asad Ullah Khan(retd) here on Tuesday. The secretary said that in order to coop with the dangers of floods, a Flood Risk Assessment Unit has also been established which is responsible to provide prior information about flood by using GIS System. This unit would also be very helpful to complete flood arrangements before the flood peaks.
It is pertinent to mention here that Punjab government has recently established Safety Evaluation Cell in the Irrigation department to ensure the safety of canal system and all the chief engineers at divisional level are directed to co ordinate with cell in case of any emergency.
Captain Asad Ullah Khan (retd) said that in accordance with the recommendations of Safety Evaluation Cell, all the spurs must be inspected well before flood season while water capacity enhancement through de-silting and elimination of encroachments settled in the way of rivers flow must be ensured by the engineers of the department. He directed the chief engineers to personally monitor the flood protection works being done to safeguard the spurs and bunds in their respected zones.
