Mango growers and exporters have urged the government to facilitate them by lowering the air freight charges so as to ensure meeting the export target of 100,000 tons of Pakistan's second major fruit crop. Multan Mango Growers Association President Tariq Khan while talking to Business Recorder here on Tuesday said that air freight charges for exporting mangoes are many times higher than the actual price of fruit.
He said higher freight charges were hampering the efforts of the exporters to enhance mango export to high end European and other markets of the world. Talking about the crop size, Tariq said last year crop size was 1.7 million tons while this year it has reduced to 1.1 million tons. He feared that it may further decrease as Multan and Rahim Yar Khan areas, which were famous for this fruit, were continuously facing dust-storms.
