The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Wednesday constituted a two-member committee to investigate the role of Chairman Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) Zafar Hijazi in allegedly tampering with the record of Chaudhry Sugar Mills Limited. The Supreme Court on June 19 directed FIA Acting Director General Captain Ahmed Latif (retd) to investigate the role of SECP Chairman Zafar Hijazi and asked the FIA to submit a comprehensive report.
Sources said the FIA team will examine the record produced before the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) probing the Sharif family's offshore assets with a view to ascertaining whether or not it was tampered with by the SECP chief. They said that the FIA team comprises Director Hazrat Ali and Director Maqsood ul Hassan. Hazrat Ali is director economic crime wing and has expertise in investigation of white-collar crimes while Hassan is a PSP officer who is currently director anti-corruption FIA.
Meanwhile, the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) probing into Panama Papers case, which is supposed to complete interrogation in the matter in sixty days, will submit its third fortnightly performance report before a three-judge special bench of Supreme Court here on June 22 (today). The bench led by Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan is overseeing the implementation of the apex court's verdict in Panama Papers will review performance of JIT and progress made in the investigation of the case.
According to sources, JIT conducted its 44th sitting at Federal Judicial Academy on Wednesday while examining documents which Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, his brother Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and others submitted to it. Meanwhile, it has been reported that the JIT has turned down application of Captain Mohammad Safdar (retd) seeking permission to appear before the team for interrogation after performing Umrah this week. The JIT has summoned him for June 24 for investigation.
According to a Press release, the Supreme Court of Pakistan issued a clarification with reference to a fake Facebook page carrying the name of the apex court. In a statement issued here on Wednesday, the top court said that "reference fake Facebook page carrying name of Supreme Court of Pakistan is being run on social media. It is, therefore, clarified that Supreme Court of Pakistan is neither using any Facebook account or page nor any other ID on any other social networking websites. Moreover, concerned quarters ie FIA and PTA have also been asked to block such IDs, pages and take legal action against the delinquents in accordance with law."
