Chairman Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan on Friday expressed scepticism over Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's recent trip to Saudi Arabia in wake of Saudi-Qatar stand-off, saying the visit could be an attempt to seek help to rescue himself from Panama Leaks.
"We were told that he went there to play the role of mediator between Qatar and Saudi Arabia, but now deputy Saudi ambassador has clearly said there was no such meeting so the question arises here why he [Nawaz Sharif] went there? I do suspect that he had gone there for lobbying to save himself from Panama Leaks," he told reporters. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif along with Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Qamar Bajwa recently visited Saudi Arabia for high-level talks after the diplomatic crisis in the Gulf intensified. On the occasion, noted lawyer Babar Awan also announced to join the bandwagon of Imran Khan, ending his 21 years association with Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).
Responding to a question, he said those who have joined PTI had set no pre-condition for joining the party, adding a good number of people from the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) also want to join the party. "There are so many people from the ruling PML-N who want to get rid of the 'godfather' but the only fear is that they will be harassed if they do so. Ejaz Chaudhry from Punjab had joined PTI and the same evening Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) landed at his residence, this is how the PML-N intimidates people, but they will join PTI at right time," he added.
He welcomed Awan in PTI saying, "Only time will tell that you took the 'best decision of your life'. Imran said that the sons of Awan had joined the PTI before him when he was staging a sit-in against the government back in 2014. Speaking on this occasion, Awan said that he left the PPP after 21 years association. "I am glad that I am going to become part of a party which is the real opposition political party led by a leader like Imran Khan. He announced to resign from his Senate membership. However, the term of Awan's Senate membership is going to end in March 2018.
