Maryam Nawaz Sharif, the daughter of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, appeared before joint investigation team (JIT) on Wednesday and warned opponents that they must stop "hatching conspiracies" against her father. Talking to reporters outside Federal Judicial Academy (FJA) - the secretariat of JIT - following a two-hours, long interrogation session, she stated that nothing is going to come out of the "conspiracy theories".
"If you conspire against Nawaz Sharif, he will return stronger than before with more backing of people in the 2018 general election. When conspiracy was launched against Nawaz Sharif, he returned even more powerful," she said. She further said her father is the only person in Pakistan who has become prime minister for the third time. "If now they do not stop conspiring against him, he will become prime minister for the fourth and fifth times," she said, adding, "Stop him if you can."
"Stop Nawaz Sharif otherwise terrorism will be completely eliminated from the country, load-shedding will come to an end, China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) will complete; and stop him otherwise and he will win the 2018 elections," she said. While criticising her opponents, she said, "We could also have used technicalities or take immunity to hide in the corridors of power or divert our vehicle to AFIC [Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology] in Rawalpindi or become an absconder from courts and hide in an official rest house in Nathiagali but we have presented ourselves for accountability of three generations," she said, announcing that her father would present his story to public next year.
She said that do not compel him (the Prime Minister) to reveal the secrets he carries and the conspiracies hatched against him before the public. She further said, "Those saying they will make us cry should know only God can make us bow down and cry." Maryam Nawaz further said that opponents also implicated her in the Dawn Leaks. The reason was to put "a father under pressure by targeting his daughter," she said, adding those who think Nawaz Sharif's daughter is his Achilles heel or a vulnerable points will ultimately find that she in fact is his strength.
Attacking PTI chief Imran Khan, she said those who have no regard for daughters and family values will never understand these things. "If you are targeting me as I am the daughter of Nawaz Sharif, I will fight back because I am his daughter," she said. She said that following the appearance of her father, his brother, uncle and her two brothers before the JIT, she appeared before the probing team despite the fact that the court order had not included her name. "We've paid off the debt that we never owed," she said with a view to highlighting her appearance before the JIT. The petitioners have failed to prove allegations levelled against her, she said.
Maryam said that she answered all the questions asked by the JIT with honesty. "I however sought answer of only question from JIT. My question was: What is the accusation against us? They had no answer to my question," she said, adding that this is the first JIT in the history of the world that started its work in the absence of allegations against the accused. She said, "Following six months in the Supreme Court and 60 days in the JIT, I realised today that they have nothing against the Sharif family."
She said that Nawaz Sharif remained chief minister for two times and is prime minister for the third time but those who are levelling allegations got nothing and did not prove corruption of a single penny against him. "If public money was involved, we are answerable, but nobody has any right to look into the private accounts of the Sharif family," she said.
The Prime Minister's daughter said those who are facing cases of misuse of public funds have petitioned for stay orders. "However, we can justify our properties and have been doing this," she said. Making an apparent reference to PTI chief Imran Khan, she also questioned why those who have no businesses and source of income are not being questioned.
She did not take any questions from the media persons. However, in answer to a question that the media posed to her, Hussain Nawaz said, questions about money trails should also be asked from the persons who have assets in Pakistan. "If you want to talk about the money trail of Nawaz Sharif, we have given the money trial. You would first prove any link of Nawaz Sharif with any asset then you talk about it," he further said. Earlier, accompanied by her husband Captain Muhammad Safdar (retd), brothers Hassan and Hussain, Minister of Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb, Special Assistant to Prime Minister Asif Kirmani, Maryam Nawaz arrived at the FJA at 11:00am.
