The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Thursday disposed of a petition of Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan challenging the victory of PPP candidate Saeed Ghani in PS-114 by-election. The by-election in Sindh Assembly constituency, PS-114, was held on July 9 wherein the PPP's candidate defeated his rival Kamran Khan Tessori, who belongs to MQM-P. Subsequently, the MQM-P challenged the results before the ECP and the commission had stopped the notification of Ghani's victory.
On Thursday, the ECP dismissed the MQM-P's application for PS-114 by-election recount, making the stay order issued against Saeed Ghani's victory redundant. Arguing before the court, Saeed Ghani's counsel, Senator Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan rejected the charges of rigging against the PPP candidate and argued that commission should notify Ghani as a winning member of provincial assembly (MPA), Sindh.
Ghani had secured 23,840 votes against MQM-P candidate Kamran Tessori's 18,106 votes, according to unofficial and unconfirmed results. Speaking outside the ECP, Ghani said the PS-114 by-election was one of the most transparent elections in Karachi's history, adding that the Rangers and media personnel were present till the counting of votes at the five polling stations where the MQM-P alleged that rigging had occurred.
