Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari on Friday said that Supreme Court's verdict to disqualify Nawaz Sharif from premiership would help curbing corruption on a higher level in the country. Addressing a press conference here he said PPP was the party which raised the Panama Papers Case. He said July 28 is an important day for Pakistan and democracy. The PPP believes in across the board accountability of all sections of societies and call upon the parliamentary committee on Accountability to urgently draft appropriate legislation to ensure across the board accountability.
Bilawal said his party had raised the issue just a day after Panama Papers leak surfaced on April 4, but didn't go to Supreme Court due to some past experiences. "We had our own reasons". Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto had stated that "Nawaz Sharif may succeed in conspiring against me but one day he will cry remembering me and my father." Supreme Court has delivered verdict. It is incumbent upon all to accept it whole-heartedly.
The verdict has disapproved the contention that the disqualification of a Prime Minister posed a threat to democracy and the parliament. The Assembly must complete his term, he said. The PPP has always supported democracy, Parliament and State institutions and will continue to do so. It is unfortunate that by not resigning in time voluntarily and not offering himself for accountability according to law made by parliament that the former Prime Minister only undermine the parliament. "We hope the verdict will help in deterring corruption in high place." Bilawal said. The PPP will field candidate for the office of the Prime Minister after consultation with other parties in the opposition.
