The Met Office has warned that the persistent heat wave is likely to unleash glacier melt in Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral, Khyber Pukhtunkhwa. It said that the temperature is expected to go up over five degrees Celsius in both glacier areas of the country in coming days. The soaring temperature and downpours are feared to trigger floods in Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral.
Alerting the public to the dangers of floods, it said that "people residing along the waters ways must remain vigilant during the period". It also asked the local communities to remain alert while the concerned authorities to take precautionary steps in this connection.
In the next 24 hours: The Met Office has also forecast mainly hot and humid weather for the most parts of the country for Sunday. It said that isolated rain-thunderstorm is expected in Malakand, Hazara, Peshawar, D.I.Khan, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala and Lahore Divisions, besides Upper FATA, Islamabad, Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir.
"Seasonal low lies over north Balochistan. Weak moist currents from Arabian Sea are penetrating upper parts of country. A shallow westerly wave is affecting northern parts of the country and its adjoining areas," it said. Maximum temperature was recorded in Turbat as 46 degrees Celsius, Sibbi 44, Dalbandin, Bhakkar and Noorpurthal 43, each, in the last 24 hours.
