United Bank Limited (UBL) and the Defence Authority Country & Golf Club (DAC&GC) has announced the commencement of the UBL-9th Independence Day Cup Open Golf Championship from 10-13 August 2017 at Defence Authority Country and Golf Club, Karachi. A total of 300 plus golfers are expected to participate in this tournament which also includes 100 plus professionals from all over the country. Around 200 golfers will participate in the main match.
The event, sponsored by UBL, is part of the Bank's month long celebrations of Pakistan's Independence Day. While, sponsoring prize money of Rs 2.5 million, UBL hopes that this event not only help raise the standards of amateur and professional golfers in the country through involvement of Pakistani golfers in the field, but also bring more prominence to the sport through its association.
Ali Habib, Head Corporate Affairs & Marketing at UBL commented at the event, "UBL actively promotes sports in Pakistan and is one of the few organizations in the country that has its own sports stadium and training facilities. Golf is one sport which is fast gaining a following in Pakistan. By sponsoring this event, we not only celebrate our Independence Day, but also provide support to a sport which needs further exposure and involvement". "We thank the Defence Authority Country & Golf Club for hosting an event of this magnitude" he further added.
Brig Tariq Rafique (Retd), Secretary, DAC&GC, who was also present at the at occasion said, "We are all set to host the prestigious 9th Independence Day Cup Open Golf Championship. With UBL as the championship's title sponsor, we are confident of delivering a highly successful event". Colonel (Retd) Zahid Iqbal course captain DAC&GC was also present on the occasion.
This Championship is a regular stroke play event of the Pakistan Golf Federation Calendar (ranking match). It is played over 54 holes spread over 03 days. This championship is primarily for the professional golfers of Pakistan who are duly registered with POE and having passed the qualifying School. Concurrently with the Championship, there are two other events being played- the Senior Professionals (over 55 years) will play 18 holes on 1 3th August, whereas the Junior Professional (under 23 years) will play 36 holes on 12 & 13 August 2017.
The Amateurs will also play three days from 11th to 13th August, whereas, the Senior Amateurs (over 55 years) will play 18 holes on August 2017. There will also be a match for Ladies, Juniors Amateurs & Veterans (over 65 years) on 10th August.
The defending Champion is Muhammad Shabbir Iqbal with unbeatable score of 11 under Par and Muhammad Munir with 2 under par on 2nd position both from Islamabad Golf Club. Seniors professional winner Muhammad Akram from Lahore GYM. Junior professional winner were Nadeem Almas of DHA Karachi and Amateur winner Zohaib Asif of DHA Karachi.
