UAF marks national tree plantation day

The University of Agriculture Faisalabad on Friday took out an awareness walk to mark national tree plantation day aimed at creating the awareness among the people about the blessings of trees and the safe environment.
The rally was organized by the Department of Forestry UAF and was led by UAF Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Muhammad Iqbal Zafar. The rally started from admin block and ended at Faculty of Agriculture. Faculty Deans, directors and a large number of students took part in the rally. The participants were carrying placards having inscribed slogans 'plant trees and curb deforestation'.
Talking to participants, Dr Iqbal Zafar said trees are essential part of healthy environment and for a better life. He said that amid the challenges of climate changes, there is a need to create awareness among the masses about enhancing trees net and end deforestation.
He said that the country's forest net was very low compared to the international standards. He said that the situation provokes different challenges including pollution, drought and floods. He stressed upon the need to take tangible steps to curb the crisis with enhanced awareness and collective efforts on part of all stakeholders. He said marking August 8 as national plantation day reminds us to play our role in this regard.
He said that instead of increment in our forest net, it is decreasing with each passing day. He said that there are more than 25000 students at the campus. They must play their role in developing green belts. He said that UAF had mapped out a plan to produce skilled manpower and provide training to forestry practitioners. He said that the UAF was a lush green area and we are making it greener.
Earlier, Department of Forestry Chairman Dr Tahir Siddique said that forest net in the country was less than 5 percent which was very low compared to international standards. He said if we do not pay attention to environment, the issue of climate changes will get worse in the years to come. Dr Iqbal Zafar planted a tree on the occasion.
