Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah Wednesday said that Pakistan People's Party (PPP) will not support the government on any amendment to Articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution. Talking to media persons, the PPP leader said that any amendment becomes questionable if it is undertaken to "save someone," adding that such amendments are always challengeable in the court of law as well.
"There was no support (from the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz) when we wanted to amend both the articles," Shah said. Shah said the PPP only wanted to restore PPP founder Zulfikar Ali Bhutto's Constitution, adding, "we wanted to repeal the clauses of Articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution introduced by General Ziaul Haq."
He said the government wants to amend the articles to save Nawaz Sharif. "The PPP will never support such an amendment to save one individual," he vowed. On Tuesday, Law Minister Zahid Hamid said during the National Assembly session that Articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution will be amended. The minister said that Parliamentary Committee on Electoral Reforms will recommend amendments to the Articles 62 and 63.
