The German doctor Ruth Pfau devoted all her life in the service of leprosy patients in Pakistan. This crippling disease has been eliminated due to her relentless efforts. She also set up a full-fledged facility for the patients of leprosy in Karachi, which is not an easy thing. No other male or female doctor would ever care to devote his or her life to take care of the leprosy patients like Ruth Pfau. She was indeed a very dedicated doctor and made name for her like "The Lady With A Lamp" (Florence Nightingale) in the Crimean War. Her passing away is an irreparable loss to the leprosy patients and to her friends as well. Dr Pfau had a passion to serve the leprosy patients and eradicate this disease from Pakistan and she achieved her goal successfully. It is good to see that our government gave her very deserving state burial and conferred other honours on her. She was nothing less than any of our National Hero.
It would be in the fitness of things if Pakistan Post issues a postage stamp in memory of Dr Ruth Pfau to commemorate her services. It may also be worth considering by Sindh government to keep a vigil on the financial aspects of the Marie Adelaide Leprosy Centre, Karachi so that it will not suffer any financial crunch that can hinder the facility of medical treatment to the patients of leprosy. After all, patients suffering from leprosy are also human beings who look at us for help and rehabilitation.
